Some things change, but some do not. There will always be video games and genres that will remain somewhat popular. Some sports video games, for example, always get played, even though they will never be as popular as MOBAs or battle royales, competitive games.
Video games like League of Legends, DotA 2 and CS: GO are among the most popular games of the decade.
There is also another game that remains at the top and has been going on steady for a while. It is called Minecraft and it has been topping the charts for over a decade. Why is it so popular? What makes Minecraft stand out? Let us take a look.
The Game Type
Minecraft is a sandbox game. As such, it gives the player a lot of ways to express themselves. Creativity is what makes any video game replayable. If you can change your build by a small margin and get an entirely different experience, then your game is by all means completely different.
Minecraft is even more replayable, in the sense that nothing really repeats in the game, as it evolves constantly. Minecraft is classified as a sandbox simulator, with procedurally generated terrain. As such, new parts of the game world are constantly being created.
It is Cute
Blocky pixelated characters are very nostalgic. Older video gamers will immediately find something nice about them, something to help them reminisce about the times that they had as youngsters. As most adults now have children of their own, they can share that experience, but in a title which is modern in all ways, except the graphics.
There is a reason for keeping the graphics the way that it is, and most of that has to do with compatibility. You can’t expect to run a game on all platforms, but at PC graphics standards. This leads to the next point.
Compatibility
Minecraft is written in Java. By its design, Java can work on any platform. Cross-platform compatibility ensures that anyone who owns a PC, console or mobile device, can play Minecraft. Popularity does that, but compatibility helps. Most developers of popular games have realized this and have started to port their amazing titles to mobile devices, some with less, some with more success.
The Gameplay
Nevermind the cute design or endless world, if the gameplay is bad, no game is worth playing. Some may get away with extraordinary graphics, but Minecraft certainly can’t. Minecraft has a couple of modes, survival being the basic one. Survival mode basically mimics survival in real life, but with gameplay elements. Anything from suffocation, enemies, to lava, can kill the character.
There are many elements which add up to make Minecraft a great game. Try it for yourself and see.
